Drawbacks are pretty much: it's expensive, people are scared of lenses, people are extra scared of "hard" lenses, people "know" you're not supposed to leave "hard" lenses in overnight [true in the general case], not a lot of people know about it.
I don't know how expensive, actually...got these lenses when I was still a student with my parents routinely supporting me for that sort of thing, and as an early adopter and edge case we weren't charged the usual rate (basically, my eye doctor got to experiment a bit with me, and we got a discount. I think I recall I was actually the first patient he saw without a corp. representative assisting.).
I don't know why, but I know a lot of people are really resistant to "hard" lenses. I think they expect something a lot more scary and uncomfortable than what you actually get.
