3 classes, no ball today. I think they're easing us into it. Tomorrow we add a class and start the balls.

My right foot is still bugging me, but it wasn't as bad as last night. My current theory is that I just tired out an inner muscle over the weekend or something and it just needs to rest and stretch out. I can give it the latter, and a bit of the former. But it wasn't bad dancing on it today in (relatively light) classes. And it feels weird even not in the shoes, or in other shoes, so I no longer think it was the shoes.

Details follow... )

Checked in, etc. Locked myself out of my room (with key in hand, just couldn't get it to unlock. Dorm mommy managed to help me back in.

Everybody is incredibly friendly. It's just like a con; hall conversations happen all the time.

Something funky is going on with either my foot or my new shoes. It feels as though they're too narrow in the toe, but these are wides. I'm pretty confident they're the right size, except that when I wear them I feel this pressure on my two smallest toes, which, at least tonight, translated into discomfort dancing and eventually pain. Not severe, just worrying. I don't know what's going on; I'm beginning to be concerned it's something weird in the shape of my foot. Just the right foot.

As a result, I only danced a few one-steps, the mixer, and the one quadrille figure tonight at the Welcome Dance. It would have been nice to have gotten more dancing in, but I was worrying about my foot. I really hope this clears up tommorow, as I have a lot of dancing to do in the next five days.

I'm off to the Newport Vintage Dance Week! I'll be somewhere between almost completely and completely offline until Sunday. Call and leave a message if you need me, I'll check voicemail on the phone a couple of times a day.

Speaking of formal dress, CVD will be hosting a Ragtime Ball this coming Saturday, 5 May, 2007 in Melrose, MA. It should be a lot of fun. Live music by Spare Parts! More information at Take-The-Cake Ragtime Ball, 2007.

I encourage everybody to go. Ragtime dance is pretty easy to pick up even if you don't know it. (If you can walk in time to music, you can One Step. Seriously.) While period-style dress is preferred, anything dressy is acceptable.

I'll almost certainly be there showing off my tails. The bit of uncertainty is because I haven't figured out how to be in two places at once, and I'm being encouraged to go to Founder's Day at Vassar. I wonder when I'd have to leave FD to make the ball...how insane am I this week?

Last time, I forgot to mention that part of the idea here is to have Harry and the Potters perform live music at the event. The good news is that they're interested. The bad news is that they plan to be reading some book that evening. New current thinking is sometime in November, between Hallowe'en and Yule.

Thanks to everybody who expressed interest last week. Same question: would you be likely to come if it were sometime in November? It seems less likely to be tied to any event except "the band and the organizers had the weekend free".

CVD is considering hosting a Harry Potter themed ball on the evening of Saturday, 21 July, 2007. We'd have "authentic" traditional wizardly dances (based on some form of traditional dances); formal robes would probably be encouraged but optional. We're thinking there might be a reading corner for people who are having trouble tearing themselves away from the book enough to dance. The event would be emphatically spoiler-free for the new novel.

Who'd be interested in coming out to such an event in the Boston area?
